It’s a 15-degree day. I procure my hose.

Being the jackass that I am, I proceed to cover the street in front of my house with water. It quickly produces a frozen sheen on the road.

Moments later, a car approaches. The driver, when reaching the icy spot, loses control of his car, bounces off several parked cars, slams into a telephone poll, and is killed instantly.

Now, for the sake of argument, let’s put the driver in the worst light possible. It turns out he was drunk.

Still, even in that scenario, which puts me in a better light, am I not the catalyst for this catastrophe? Would I not be in a world of trouble in the eyes of the law?

Granted, I’m not a lawyer, so I’m willing to admit that perhaps I’m missing something here.

From a commonsense perspective, though, it strikes me that I should be the one to blame and that there should be some justice meted out on behalf of the dead driver.
